Targetting
u should be able to target while dead when u just have heroes or henchies. But mainly have this in hero battles since sometimes u are dead for like 27 seconds. The heroes are there to be ordered so u should be able to.

Click the number next to the heroes name. A small box with the heroes health, energy, and skills pops up. On the left hand side of this box is a button to lock its target. If you only need/want it for heroes, it is there. Hench, however, target what they want when you are dead. You can call a target while dead, but the AI does not seem to respond to it like it would if you were alive.
